Press review: Volleyball still making headlines after rumble in Rio

Lausanne, Switzerland, August 24, 2016 – The Rio 2016 Olympic Games may have ended a few days ago, but volleyball is continuing to make headlines around the world after a spectacular event at both the Maracanazinho and on Copacabana beach.

Brazil’s Estadao noted that the introduction of new technology – particularly the challenge system – made the volleyball and beach volleyball tournaments not only fairer in terms of ensuring the correct decision was made, but added tension for the crowd and players as the decision was pending

Meanwhile, CCTV celebrated the return of the victorious women’s volleyball team, who clinched gold under the guidance of Lang Ping for the first time since Athens 2004, adding that the triumph “turned the team into national heroes.”

NDTV – one of India’s biggest media outlets – also highlighted the beach volleyball tournament as one of Rio 2016’s ten unforgettable moments.

An astonishing 8.5 million people watched Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst’s epic fight for gold in Germany, almost 29 per cent of the total audience in the duo’s home country. And they were not left disappointed as the duo overcame home favourites Agatha Bednarczuk and Barbara Seixas to emulate Jonas Reckermann and Julius Brink’s triumph at London 2012.

Finally, Canada’s Ben Saxton and Chaim Schalk have been talking about their Rio experience, saying their win over Pedro Solberg and Evandro Goncalves in the pool stages was a particular highpoint.
