Principality of Monaco, November 24, 2016 – The FIVB was today among the nominees for the Peace and Sport Federation of the Year Award in recognition of its development work, in particular its Rio Social Sport Legacy programme.
The award was won by the Taekwondo Cares Programme and presented during the Peace and Sports Awards Ceremony held at the Fairmont Hotel in Monaco as part of the Peace and Sport Forum.
During the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, the FIVB developed a Social Sport Legacy programme. This included hosting a VolleyballYourWay Festival that brought people of all ages together for a celebration of volleyball. The FIVB also launched two volleyball development training centres in favela neighbourhoods in Rio. The centres are aimed at educating and socialising boys and girls aged 7-17 through volleyball. The FIVB is partly funding the centres as part of its commitment to leaving a sustainable legacy in Rio as well as highlighting the sport’s appeal as a fun universal sport enjoyed by generations of fans worldwide.
The FIVB also refurbished a local Rio school, which was used as the site for its Volleyball House, leaving a social legacy for generations of school children and teachers. Opposite the Volleyball House on Copacabana Beach, the FIVB organised daily activities for people of all ages to play, learn and meet volleyball legends as part of the FIVB’s commitment to make volleyball the number one family sport entertainment in the world.
The FIVB President Ary Graça said: “We are extremely proud and honoured to have been shortlisted for the Peace and Sport Award for Federation of the Year. The activities we organised in Rio showcased the capacity and huge potential of volleyball in inspiring hope and promoting peace through sport. As part of the FIVB’s 9 Goals Strategy, we are committed to becoming the number one sport that serves the needs of humanitarian organisations in their programmes and the nomination is prestigious recognition for the work we do every day. We would also like to wholeheartedly congratulate Taekwondo for receiving this well-deserved award.”
In 2015 the award was presented to the Fiji Volleyball Federation, one of the FIVB National Federations.
