Rio de Janeiro, August 11, 2016 – Pedro Salgado and Evandro Goncalves recovered from losing their opening two matches at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games to book an automatic place in the elimination rounds at Copacabana Beach Arena on Thursday.
The Brazilians defeated Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Janis Smedins 2-1 (21-16, 20-22, 15-7), a result which placed them in second in the pool, but which knocked the Latvians out.

Cuba’s Nivaldo Diaz and Sergio Gonzalez topped the pool with three victories, while Canada’s Ben Saxton and Chaim Schalk went into the lucky-loser round.

Saxton and Schalk took on Poland’s Grzegorz Fijalek and Mariusz Prudel and finished victors, 2-0 (21-19, 21-18).

In the other lucky loser match Italy’s Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo also faced Polish opposition in Bartosz Losiak and Piotr Kantor and booked their place in the elimination round with a 2-1 (21-12, 15-21, 15-13) win.

Two Austrian duos – Clemens Doppler and Alexander Horst and Alexander Huber and Robin Seidl - filled the best third-placed teams who automatically qualifed for the round of 16.
Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena claimed top spot in their pool with a 2-1 (21-13, 17-21, 24) victory over Nicolai and Lupo.

They finished above Mexico’s Lombardo Ontiveros and Juan Virgen, who finished pool play by beating Tunisia’s Mohamed Naceur and Choaib Salah 2-0 (21-10, 21-10).
