Mexico’s Ontiveros & Virgen secure elimination berth

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 11, 2016 - With Lombardo Ontiveros and Juan Virgen being their country’s first Olympic Beach Volleyball participate since 2000, the Mexican pair made the most of the opportunity by qualifying for the elimination rounds here Thursday at the Rio “Summer” Games with a two-set win over Tunisia.

With an opening win Sunday over Daniele Lupo and Paolo Nicolai of Italy in three sets, Ontiveros and Virgen scored their second win Thursday with a 2-0 (21-10, 21-10) in 27 minutes over African Continental Cup qualifiers Choaib Belhaj and Mohamed Naceur of Tunisia.

Americans Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena of the United States captured the Pool C title by defeating Daniele Lupo and Paolo Nicolai of Italy 2-1 (21-13, 17-21, 24-22) in 55 minutes at the same time the Mexicans were playing Tunisia.
