Herrera and Gavira top pool and send Gibb and Patterson out of Rio 2016

 
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 10, 2016 – Pablo Herrera and Adrian Gavira beat Jacob Gibb and Casey Patterson 2-1 (21-19, 16-21, 15-7) to top their pool and progress to the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games beach volleyball elimination rounds on Wednesday. 

However, the result means that Gibb and Patterson – two time FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour gold medallists – are knocked out after they finished bottom of the pool. READ MORE

Three of the six pools completed on Wednesday with the top two teams progressing to the round of 16. The top two third-placed teams join them, while the other four third-placed teams will play off for the remaining two berths after the other pools wrap up on Thursday. 

Qatar’s Jefferson Pereira and Cherif Younousse join the Spaniards in the round of 16 after they finished second with a 2-1 (18-21, 21-19, 15-12) victory over Austria’s Alexander Huber and Robin Seidl. 

Huber and Seidl’s pipped Gibb and Patterson to third place by having a better set win-loss ratio. READ MORE

Alison and Bruno returned to winning ways when they held off the challenge of in-form Italian dup Alex Ranghieri and Adrian Carambula.
 

The Brazilians, world champions and number one seeds, were in need of victory after they had slipped to a loss in their second match against Austria’s Clemens Doppler and Alexander Horst, but looked strong in a 2-0 (21-19, 21-16) triumph. READ MORE

The Italians matched Alison and Bruno’s record and will finish in first place after Clemens Doppler and Alexander Horst defeated Canada’s Josh Binstock and Sam Schachter 2-1 (21-19, 16-21, 15-8).

The result means that the Austrians finish in third place in the pool and now will watch the matches unfold to find out whether they progress to the last 16 or endure the lucky loser round. READ MORE

Nikita Liamin and Dmitri Barsouk secured their second win and with it second place in Pool B behind Brouwer and Meeuwsen.

The Russian’s beat Germany’s Markus Bockermann and Lars Fluggen 2-0 (21-14, 21-17) to push Losiak and Kantor into third place and to bring an end to Bockermann and Fluggen’s tournament. READ MORE
