Classy conquistadors conquer Copacabana

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 10, 2016 - Adrian Gavira and Pablo Herrera saved their best for the last as the Spaniards secured their second Pool F Beach Volleyball win of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games by defeating Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson of the United States.

With their 2-1 (21-19, 16-21, 15-7) win in 55 minutes, Gavira and Herrera are guaranteed a spot in the 16-team men’s elimination bracket where opening matches will be played Friday and Saturday at the 12,000-seat “Coliseu on Copacabana”.  The Americans face possible elimination and have to await the result from Austria vs. Qatar match to know if they will continue playing in the Rio “Summer” Games.

After the two teams split the first two sets, the Spaniards went on a 13-5 run to score their fourth international win in seven matches with Gibb and Patterson, who had won three matches with Gavira and Herrera that were all three-setters.  Herrera had four of his seven blocks in the deciding set, including a stuff for the final point of the match.
