Wang & Yue gain elimination berth

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 10, 2016 - Fan Wang and Yuan Yue of China led from start-to-finish in posting their second Pool C win in the women’s competition at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games here Wednesday in eliminating Asian Continental Cup qualifiers Mariafe Artacho and Nicole Laird of Australia.

Wang and Yue, who were the last team to qualifying for the Copacabana quadrennial via the FIVB World Tour’s Rio ranking system where 17 pairs earned Olympic berths, scored a 2-0 (21-16, 21-11) win in 36 minutes over Artacho and Laird.

By finishing with a 2-1 record, Wang and Yue could still tie for the Pool C leadership if Isabelle Forrer and Anouk Verge-Depre of Switzerland upset American Olympic medalists April Ross and Kerri Walsh Jennings Wednesday evening at the 12,000-seat “Coliseu on Copacabana”.

Ross and Walsh Jennings are 2-0 in the group after defeating both the Chinese and Australians.  Forrer and Verge-Depre are 1-1 with a setback to Wang and Yue this past Saturday before defeating Artacho and Laird Monday.  If a three-way tie exists, a team’s points ratio among the three deadlocked pairs will be used in determined the order of placement in the group.
