Spain and Argentina wrap up Saturday morning session

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 5, 2016 - Spain's #11 seed Elsa Baquerizo/Liliana Fernandez and #14 seed Ana Gallay/Georgina Klug finish off the morning session in the first Pool B match of the Rio Olympics.  Elsa/Liliana are hoping to advance past pool play just like they did in London when they finished second in Pool D.  Ana is hoping to win a match in pool play after going winless in London with Virginia Zonta and finishing in 19th place.

Head to Head
These two teams have met 10 times on the FIVB World Tour, with Elsa/Liliana holding a 7-3 advantage.  The Spaniards won the first four meetings in 2013 and 2014 in a pool play and three knockout round matches.  Since that time, the two teams have alternated winning the last six meetings with each team winning one time in 2015 and twice in 2016.  Five of the ten matches have been won in straight sets and five have needed a third set to decide the match.  When Elsa/Liliana win the first set, they have won all five meetings and have won two times after losing the initial set.  Gallay/Klug won the first set in all of their victories and have not won when dropping the first game.

Historically the #11 seed and #14 seed have split their four meetings in the Olympic Games.  The #11 has won two of the three matches in pool play with one win requiring three sets, and the #14 seed won the first-round match-up in Sydney (2000).
