Qataris make history with maiden Olympic win

 
Rio de Janeiro, August 8, 2016 – Jefferson Pereira and Cherif Younousse made history when they became the first Qatari side to win an Olympic beach volleyball match, on day three of the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games beach volleyball tournament.

Jefferson and Cherif fought back from losing the opening set to experienced Spanish duo Pablo Herrera and Adrian Gavira to win 2-1 (13-21, 21-18, 15-12). READ MORE 

Later in the day Austria’s Clemens Doppler and Alexander Horst recovered from their opening defeat to Alex Ranghieri and Adrian Carambula to pull off a surprise victory over number one seeds Alison Cerutti and Bruno Schmidt. 


The Austrians ignored the majority Brazilian crowd to hold their nerve in a tie-break to prevail 2-1 (23-21, 16-21, 15-13) and give themselves the chance to finishing in second place. READ MORE

Doppler and Horst’s win was the first of two back-to-back victories for the Austrian sides. Less than an hour later their compatriots Alexander Huber and Robin Seidl bounced back from an opening loss to defeat USA’s Jacob Gibb and Casey Patterson, 2-0 (21-8, 21-18).  READ MORE

Ranghieri and Carambula racked up their second win of the tournament to put themselves in poll position in pool one, though they face a final pool match against Alison and Bruno. 



They enjoyed the best of a three-set clash with Canada’s Josh Binstock and Sam Schachter and finished with a 2-1 (21-18, 14-21, 15-11) win. READ MORE

Former world champions Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen matched their record of two wins from two with a 2-1 (21-19, 17-21, 16-14) over Germany’s Markus Bockermann and Lars Fluggen, who now require a win from their final pool match to stand any chance of reaching the elimination rounds. READ MORE

Russia’s Dmitri Barsouk and Nikita Liamin started the day with a 2-0 (21-14, 21-17) win over Polish young guns Bartosz Losiak and Piotr Kantor that leaves the Russians with a chance of progressing beyond the pool stage. READ MORE
