Nummerdor and Varenhorst not surprised by tough Polish test

Rio de Janeiro, August 9, 2016 – The Netherlands Reinder Nummerdor and Christiaan Varenhorst recorded their second win at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games when they beat Poland’s Grzegorz Fijalek and Mariusz Prudel 2-1 (21-17, 19-21, 15-9) at the Copacabana Beach Arena on Tuesday.

Here’s what they said after the match…

Reinder Nummerdor, the Netherlands
“We know them well and only the last time we played them was it 2-0, but normally it is 2-1. They are a very technical team and they find solutions when they are in trouble. We were winning, but still they managed to win the second set just by keeping on playing.

“It is tough out there, you see so many upsets. The field is so strong and anyone can finish on the podium, it is just who is on form on the day. Then you have the single elimination and that’s going to be a nice battle.

“The first match was very windy, but I think we played a good game. Today we missed some side-outs and we were sloppy and after the transition and after my defence we were really sloppy. We had a lot of opportunities to make break points and I think we can improve on that.”
