Italy and Mexico kick off day two with pool C action

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 6, 2016 - Italy's #10 seed Daniele Lupo/Paolo Nicolai battle Mexico's #15 seed, Lombardo Ontiveros/Juan Virgen as the men get started on day two.  The Italians are hoping to improve on their 5th-place finish in London while the Mexican's are making their Olympic debut.

Head to Head
Lupo/Nicolai lead the series 3-1 on the FIVB World Tour with Lombardo Ontiveros/Virgen winning the last meeting in pool play at the Moscow Grand Slam in May.  Three of the four matches have required a third set with the Moscow match going into overtime in the third for a 17-21, 21-19, 23-21 victory in 53 minutes for the Mexicans.  The only straight-set match required overtime in both sets with the Italians winning 22-20 and 24-22 in 41 minutes in the round of 16 at the Vitória Open in March.

Historically the #15 seed has pulled the upset four out of the five times over the #10 seed in the Olympic Games, winning two out of the three in pool play at the last three Olympic Games.  The two seeds met two times in Sydney (2000) with Germany's Jorg Ahmann/Axel Hager winning both match-ups on their way to a bronze medal.  The Germans defeated Spain's Javier Bosma/Fabio Diez 15-13 in round 1 and 16-14 in the quarterfinals.
