Dutch pair clear second hurdle on Copacabana

Rio de Janeiro, August 8, 2016 – The Netherland’s Marlene van Iersel and Madelein Meppelink made it two wins from two at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games when they beat Costa Rica’s Karen Cope Charles and Natalia Alfaro 2-0 (21-16, 21-16) at the Copacabana Beach Arena on Monday.

Here’s what they said after the match…

Marlene van Iersel, the Netherlands
“We are two down, one to go and it is going ok. We know Australia (Louise Bawden and Taliqua Clancy) are a really good team and we will have to bring our A-game to beat them.

“Today wasn’t pretty, but it was effective. You just have to adapt to whatever comes.”

Madelein Meppelink, the Netherlands
“We know what they (Bawden and Clancy) do, they know what we do and it is going to be a battle to win.

“Today our serve wasn’t the best. We made a lot of errors and I think the serve is going to be the key.

“The first game we started a bit shaky and then stepped up a level and we played quite solid. With the wind this wasn’t our best game, we can do better.”
