Continental Cup qualifier nets second Beach win

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 11, 2016 - Russians Dmitri Barsouk and Nikita Liamin, one of the last two entries into the men’s Beach Volleyball competition at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, posted their second Pool B win here late Tuesday by eliminating a team from Germany from the Copacabana quadrennial.

Barsouk and Liamin, who were part of a Russia team that secured the Rio berth at the FIVB Continental Cup Finals last month in Sochi, scored a 2-0 (21-14, 21-17) win 38 minutes over Markus Bockermann and Lars Fluggen of Germany.  It marked the second time in two weeks that the Russians had eliminated Bockermann and Fluggen from an international event as Barsouk and Liamin posted a three-set win over the Germans July 29 in Klagenfurt, Austria.

The Russians, who never trailed in the match with Bockermann and Fluggen, finished second in Pool B behind Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen of The Netherlands.  With a 3-0 mark to win the group, the Dutch defeated Piotr Kantor and Bartosz Losiak of Poland 2-0 (21-19, 21-19) in 39 minutes earlier Wednesday.

Kantor and Losiak finished the group with a 1-2 record after defeating Bockermann and Fluggen 2-9 (21-11, 23-21) in 38 minutes Saturday.
