Agatha and Barbara step up focus as elimination rounds begin

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 12, 2016 – Brazil’s Agatha Bednarczuk and Barbara Seixas progress to the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games quarterfinals after they defeated China’s Fan Wang and Yuan Yue 2-0 (21-12, 21-16) at the Copacabana Beach Arena on Friday.

Here’s what they said after the match…

Agatha Bednarczuk, Brazil
“I think the difference with the last match was our concentration. We started very concentrated and had the same mind set from the first point to the last. We talked a lot and this was the key difference.

“Every game is a new tournament. When we started today it was a new tournament and when we start our next game, that is a new tournament because if you lose you go home, so we have one chance and just one chance now.”

Barbara Seixas, Brazil
“I think we are very close to each other. We try to help each other all the time, even when we are at our worst moments we try to push ourselves a little bit more. We try to think positive about what we have to do and try to bring solutions to the game. That makes a difference for us.

“It's a very good relationship. We have been together six years and it's been an awesome journey. We have a lot of fun together and we have really open minds. We are always open to communicate with each other about our troubles and difficulties.”

Fan Wang, China
“We’ve played four games here, one against a USA team (Kerri Walsh-Jennings and April Ross) and one was from Brazil, so I think we have learned a lot.

“The noise made it hard to concentrate at times. We have played this team before and for most of the time we didn’t win.

“It might be normal to lose this game because we don't have enough experience. Today we actually had a lot of chances, but we missed them, especially from me. I missed a lot of serve-receive passes, but the thing is, we tried our best.

“We are the only Chinese team, so our coach and country did not put too much pressure on us, and just (told us) to relax ourselves.”
