The Serbian women’s programme has become much envied over the past decade as the team have developed into genuine medal contenders every time they take the floor. Their transformation began at the 2006 World Championship where, appearing as Serbia and Montenegro, they won the bronze medal. A year later Serbia claimed silver at the European Championship, while 2008 marked their first Olympic appearance when they finished equal-fifth in Beijing. They won the European League three times from 2009 to 2011, while a gold medal at the 2011 European Championship and bronze at the same year’s World Grand Prix further boosted their reputation. A spate of injuries plagued the team’s campaign at the London 2012 Olympic Games and they failed to win a match. They will have another chance at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games as they qualified to the event through their second place finish at the 2015 World Cup.

Serbia marked their sixth consecutive appearance at the World Grand Prix. In 2015 they finished eighth overall but had better performance in 2014 when they finished sixth in the Intercontinental Round of Group 1. However, they failed to qualify for the Final Six. They won the bronze medal in 2013, following up on an 11th-place finish in 2012. At the 2014 World Championship they finished equal-seventh after just missing out on the third round.
