Sloetjes strikes with 21 points to lead Netherlands

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 12, 2016 – Netherlands defeated Puerto Rico 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-16) to improve to a 3-1 win-loss record in Pool B of the women’s volleyball tournament at Rio 2016 Olympic Games on Friday.

Lonneke Sloetjes had another strong offensive performance for the Netherlands with 21 points, including one block and three aces, while Robin De Kruijf had four blocks and totaled 12 points.

Karina Ocasio and Daly Santana had 12 and 10 points, respectively, as the best scorers for Puerto Rico, which remained winless in four outings.

Puerto Rico was within three points of distance at 16-13 but managed to win only one more point after that and Netherlands won 25-14.

In the second set with the score tied at 22-22, Plak gave Netherlands the lead with one big spike from left side and the Dutch side won 25-22 with blocks by DeKruijf and Plak against Santana and Ocasio.

After teams were tied at 8-5 in the third set, Netherlands dominated the rest of the way to claim the set and the victory 25-16.
