Russia rewrite the books in victory over Egypt

 

Maxim Mikhaylov (17) and Artem Volvich (14) were the top scorers for Russia in the lopsided win over Egypt

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 11, 2016 – Russia beat Egypt 3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-9) for their second win against one loss in Pool B of the men’s volleyball tournament at Rio 2016 Olympic Games shattering several records along the way.

Omaha 2015

Artem Volvich and Maxim Mikhaylov registered 14 and 13 points, respectively, as the leaders in the Russian victory, with Volvich recording a total of eight blocks.

The 25-9 difference in the third set broke the record of 25-10 set by Spain against Egypt in the second set of a 3-0 victory at Sydney in 2000 and later equaled by Poland also against Egypt in the third set of a 3-0 win in Beijing 2008.

Omaha 2015

The 112 total points between the two teams erased the old mark of 119 set in a Cuban victory over Egypt in Sydney 2000.

It was also the shortest match in men’s Olympic history in time duration with only 54 minutes with the previous quickest match a victory of Serbia over Egypt in 56 minutes in Beijing.

Russia took an 8-2 lead in the first set and expanded it to 20-10 before finishing with a lopsided 25-11 result.

Things improved slightly for Egypt in the second set but again Russia dominated to conclude at 25-17.
