Mihajlovic and Brakocevic join to halt Puerto Rico

 

After winning the long first set against Puerto Rico, Serbia were able to celebrate

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 8, 2016 – Serbia defeated a spirited Puerto Rico in straight sets 3-0 (29-27, 25-18, 25-20) for their second victory in as many outings in Pool B of the women’s volleyball tournament at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Brankica Mihajlovic and Jovana Brakocevic scored 16 and 13 points, respectively, as the offensive Serbian leaders in the match, while Milena Rasic had four of the eight blocks by the winners.

Karina Ocasio had 16 points, including two blocks and two aces, as the best player for the Puerto Rican side. Aury Cruz added 9 points in the loss.

The Serbians outscored Puerto Rico in spikes 50-35 and also in blocks 8-5. The Puerto Ricans committed 17 unforced errors compared to 20 by the winners.

The first set was a terrific battle between two teams playing hearts out volleyball until the end when Milena Rasic blocked Aurea Cruz for the 29-27 result.

Serbia dominated in the second set with powerful attacks by Mihajlovic and Brakocevic against a Puerto Rican team showing effects of the grueling battle.

The third set was again a battle with both teams battling point by point. Mihajlovic broke a tie at 17-all and Serbia went on to claim the set and the victory 25-20.
