Russia subdued Argentina in their contest on Saturday
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 6, 2016 – Ekaterina Kosianenko landed eight aces to lead Russia to a straight-set 3-0 (25-13, 25-10, 25-16) over Argentina in Pool A of the women’s volleyball tournament of Rio 2016 Olympic Games on Saturday night.
Nataliya Gonchareva and Tatyana Kosheleva led Russia with 14 and 12 points, respectively, while Iana Shcherban and Kosianenko finished with 9 and 8 in the win. Tanya Acosta and Paula Nizetich were the best for Argentina with 12 and 8 points.
Russia subdued Argentina in services winners 10-1, held the advantage in the blocking category 9-3 and outscored their opponents 38-28 in spikes.
Russia stormed past Argentina in the first set they won 25-13 behind the spikes of Goncharova who scored via four spikes and the effective serves of Kosianenko who landed four winners from the service line. Nizetich was the lone bright spot in Argentina side with four points.
The second set took a similar path as Goncharova continued to lead the Russian offence and Kosianenko added one more ace to her haul in the lopsided 25-10 result.
Argentina battled harder in the third set but the result was the same as Russia dominated 25-16 with three more aces by Kosianenko
