France and Mexico look for first victory in Rio

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 9, 2016 - France will play against Mexico in the first Pool A match on the second competition day of the men’s volleyball tournament at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Both teams suffered losses at the start on Sunday and will be looking to recover.

France really suffered against Italy. With a performance, untypical for the otherwise very strong French team, they allowed a speedy 0-3 (20-25, 20-25, 15-20) defeat. None of the French players managed to reach the double figures in scoring. “It was a rough start for us, but we must concentrate on our next match against Mexico,” captain Benjamin Toniutti commented.

Mexico, on the other hand, were quite pleased with their performance against Brazil on Sunday. They even won the first set against the powerful hosts of the Games before losing by 1-3 (25-23, 19-25, 14-25, 18-25).  Daniel Vargas was Mexico’s top scorer with 15 points. “We went out with a good taste in our mouths after performing that well against a great team. But we will go for more in this tournament,” captain Carlos Guerra stated after the match.
