Dutch stun China as women's tournament begins at Rio 2016 Olympic

 

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 7, 2016 – The Netherlands dealt FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Cup 2015 champions China a shock defeat while hosts Brazil, Korea, USA, Russia and Serbia all celebrated victories as the women’s tournament at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games opened in style on Saturday.

The Dutch were made to work for their win, overcoming world No.3 China in five thrilling sets (25-23, 21-25, 18-25, 25-22, 15.13)..

Korea opened the tournament with a 3-1 (19-25, 25-15, 25-17, 25-21) win over Japan, with Brazil sweeping past Cameroon in straight sets (25-14, 25-21, 25-13)
.

FIVB Volleyball Women’s world champions USA opened their campaign with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-17) victory over NORCECA rivals Puerto Rico as Russia beat Argentina by the same margin (25-13, 25-10, 25-16) and Serbia closed out the day with a straight sets win (27-25, 25-20, 25-23) over Italy.
