Dani Lins surrounded by her teammates as Brazil shut out Japan at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 10, 2016 - Hosts and defending champions Brazil thrilled yet another sellout crowd at the Maracanazinho as they destroyed Japan 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-22) to punch their ticket to the women's volleyball quarterfinals at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Brazil join USA and Russia in qualifying to the quarterfinals, while Japan drop to 1-2 -though the Asian side remains very much in contention.
Even when coach Ze Roberto brought on his subs in the second set, Brazil were just too powerful for the London 2012 bronze medallists. Thaisa Menezes made her first appearance at this Olympics, entering the court twice at the end of sets 2 and 3 and indeed scoring match point with a quick kill down the middle.
Natalia Pereira bagged 16 points as Brazil once again provided a nicely balanced scoring distribution across all positions. Saori Sakoda was Japan's best scorer on 11 points.
