Brazil and Serbia lead the race in Rio 2016 women's volleyball

Brazil players thank their passionate fans for their support after downing Argentina at the Maracanazinho.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 9, 2016 - Defending Olympic champions and hosts Brazil are joined by Russia, Serbia and USA as the only undefeated teams of the Rio 2016 women's volleyball tournament after round 2 of pool play.

Brazil made short work of Argentina 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-11) in Pool A before a passionate sellout crowd at the iconic venue of the competition, the Maracanazinho.

Earlier on Monday, Russia had outlasted Korea 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 25-14) in a very tight game and London 2012 bronze medallists Japan had scored their first victory of Rio 2016 - a 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-17) affair over Cameroon.

Serbia players celebrate their win over Puerto Rico

Serbia doubled their wins in Pool B of the Olympic tournament with a 3-0 (29-27, 25-18, 25-20) sweep of Puerto Rico. The Balkan side, together with Brazil from Pool A, are the only two teams not to have dropped a single set yet.

Previously, China had bounced back from their opening day defeat in the hands of the Netherlands to defeat Italy 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-16). The Netherlands led 2-1 but failed to cause a second sensation in as many matches, eventually succumbing to reigning world champions USA 3-2 (18-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-20, 15-8).

Women's pool play at Rio 2016 continues on Wednesday with round 3. The top four teams of each pool advance to the quarterfinals.
