Team profile

Cuba

The Cuban men’s team may have been overshadowed by their female counterparts in the Olympic Games, but the men have had a fair share of glory as they gave Cuba their first-ever Olympic medal. Cuba won a bronze medal at the Montreal 1976 Olympic Games and will be making their seventh Olympic appearance at Rio 2016. The Cubans qualified to the Olympic Games through the NORCECA Olympic Qualification Tournament in Edmonton, Canada, after a 16-year absence. Cuba also have two silver and two bronze World Championship medals and have won the NORCECA Championship 15 times.

Cuba showed their best and most reliable form in the decade following their World League debut in 1991, when they finished second. In the following eight years, they were never out of the top four and won the title in 1998, as well as finishing as runners-up another four times. In recent years, they have finished fourth twice, in 2009 and 2010, as well as third in 2012. It all gives them an enviable World League medal haul of one gold, five silversand three bronze medals. Only the elite trio of Brazil, Italy and Russia have more medals in the history of the competition. Lately, the Cuban team’s results fluctuated as they struggled for consistency.
