The FIVB’s Good Net project was recognised as a top innovative sustainability initiative by the first-ever Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF) Sustainability Award.The GAISF Sustainability Award 2020, which aims to shine a spotlight on the efforts of International Sports Federations (IFs) to promote sustainable sport, awarded the FIVB third place for its creative Good Net project during the GAISF General Assembly. The Good Net project, developed by the FIVB in collaboration with Ghost Diving, seeks to remove ghost nets (discarded fishing nets) from our oceans and give them a new lease of life as volleyball nets. The project was commended by GAISF for its innovative solution to the critical plastic pollution problem in our world’s oceans, along with the FIVB’s ongoing efforts to educate the global Volleyball Family about ocean conservation at flagship volleyball events worldwide.Since its launch in March 2019 in Copacabana, Brazil, the Good Net project has been showcased at a number of FIVB events, including the 2019 Beach Volleyball World Championships and the World Tour Finals 2019. Good Net was also recently showcased at a beach volleyball event in the unique location of Lofoten, Norway where the current world number one ranked beach volleyball team, Christian Sorum and Anders Mol (best known as the Beachvolley Vikings), were challenged by Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Jānis Šmēdiņš from Latvia.
