Rio honours Olympic medallists with Wall of Champions

The names of the Rio 2016 women's beach volleyball medallists are inscribed in the Wall of Champions

Lausanne, Switzerland, January 18, 2017 – The Rio 2016 Wall of Champions honours the medallists at last year's Summer Games. Unveiled by Rio de Janeiro mayor Eduardo Paes in December, it stands proudly at the Barra Olympic Park.

The names of athletes or teams that featured on the podium in Rio 2016 have been inscribed on the curved steel wall display, which will enhance the Olympic park’s status as a tourism hub.

Volleyball and beach volleyball were signature events at Rio 2016, and played in the Brazilian city’s most iconic venues – the Maracanazinho and Copacabana Beach.

Hosts Brazil excelled in both disciplines, with one medal in volleyball and two medals in beach volleyball. Italy got two silver medals, while the United States bagged three bronze medals.

China scored their third Olympic gold medal when they won over Serbia in the women’s volleyball final, while Germany got gold in women’s beach volleyball.

Serbia and the Netherlands had their moments too when they earned silver and bronze medals in women’s volleyball and men’s beach volleyball, respectively.
