Max Holt joins USA 2016 Players of the Year

Lausanne, Switzerland, December 13, 2016 - Max Holt has been named USA Player of the Year for 2016 by USA Volleyball, the country's governing body for the sport, in recognition of his Rio 2016 Olympic performance where USA claimed the bronze medal.



The nomination of the 29-year-old, who plays this season for defending Italian champions Azimut Modena, is the latest in a string of end-of-year individual awards announced by USA Volleyball, including Jordan Larson-Burbach in the women's category, and Phil Dalhausser and April Ross in beach volleyball.

Playing for USA at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games was a dream the middle blocker had nourished since he was a kid growing up in Cincinnati.

"That was my dream as soon as I started playing volleyball," said Holt. "I always told myself, 'That’s where you want to be'."



Holt was the second-leading blocker of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games with 20 blocks for an average of .65 per set (Holt started all 31 sets USA played in Rio). He was also second among all servers with 12 aces (.39 per set) and he scored on 45 kills to put him 13th among all Olympic scorers.

"If we had played for a gold medal, I thought Max could have been the Olympic MVP," said USA head coach at the Games John Speraw. "I thought he was the best middle blocker of the tournament."
